Do your students have the skills and ability to interact with and understand people from different cultures? Are they equipped to work in diverse environments? More and more college campuses are focusing their efforts toward introducing students to a range of skills, knowledge, and attitudes that allow them to navigate and thrive in an increasing multicultural world upon graduation.
Colleges like The College of Wooster are promoting intercultural understanding during International Education Week (IEW). Recently, Creative Dining chefs supported The College of Wooster’s efforts by using food as a catalyst to appreciate cultural differences.
For those unfamiliar, IEW is an annual celebration of international education and cultural exchange, a time to recognize the benefits of global connections. Creative Dining at The College of Wooster dedicated a week in November to immerse students in the rich diversity of cultures represented on campus. This year, the results were truly delicious.

Culinary Journey Around the World
Instead of just offering their usual fare, a daily menu was created that highlighted the flavors of different countries. From the delicate umami of Japan to the vibrant spices of India, each day was a culinary adventure. Here’s a glimpse of their mouthwatering menu:
- Japan: Udon with Mentsuyu Soup and Beef, Cucumber Salad, Matcha Pancakes with Red Bean Paste.
- West Africa: Grilled and Fried Chicken Wings, Jollof rice, Plantains.
- India: Chaat Bowls.
- Bangladesh: Chicken Roast with Pulao Rice, Mashed Potatoes with Mustard Oil and Red Chiles.
- China: Dan Dan Noodles, Char Siu Pork, Mapo Tofu, Rice, Smacked Cucumber Salad, Mushroom Salad.
The Secret Ingredient: Collaboration and Authenticity
What made this event so successful? The commitment to authenticity. Creative Dining partnered with The College of Wooster’s international student services and asked students to share their family recipes. Our chefs worked side-by-side with these international students to be sure we made them “just like their family” prepared it. No short cuts. We sourced ingredients from local international markets and held taste tests with students.
This collaboration ensured that the dishes were not only delicious but also truly representative of each culture. The dining team even held taste tests with the students beforehand, guaranteeing an authentic experience.
A Recipe for Success: Benefits Beyond the Plate
The impact of the IEW celebration extended far beyond the dining hall. Students raved about the new cuisines, and the event generated significant excitement and engagement.
- Cultural Humility: Students demonstrated an openness to learning from others and embracing differing flavor profiles.
- Social Cohesion: Social harmony and mutual respect among students from different cultural background.
- Authentic Flavors: By working with international students, dining delivered a truly genuine culinary experience that felt like home.
- Student Engagement: The event fostered a sense of community and allowed students to share their cultures with their peers.
- Social Media Buzz: The visually appealing dishes and engaging content generated a high level of social media interaction, increasing visibility and engagement.
- Conversation Starters: With international students sharing their favorite family recipes, other students hared their favorites as well, creating a sense of connectivity and community.
