From the heart of the Balkans to the edges of the Caucasus, Eastern Europe is a culinary crossroads—where Western European influences (German, French, Italian) meet the Middle East and Mediterranean (Turkish, Georgian, Armenian). The result is a cuisine that’s as complex and comforting.
Pickled vegetables, root vegetables and cabbage, as well as pork and beef are often featured in this region. Common dishes include pierogi, cabbage rolls, and soups and stews like goulash and borscht. Variations on sauerkraut can be found throughout. Spices common to Eastern Europe include paprika dill, caraway, and mustard.
If you're dreaming of walking along the Vltava River in beautifully historic Prague or touring a castle in an alpine village in Slovenia, you're in the right head-space for these hearty and flavorful dishes!

We're Traveling By Food this summer!
This time we're dipping into the flavors of China. Even though Chinese food is represented by distinct regional styles, they often feature rice, noodles and soy sauce. The focus is largely on balancing the five basic tastes of sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. That last one is a relatively new idea to the western eater; umami was only officially named a separate taste in the 1980s! It is most frequently found in foods with high levels of the amino acid glutamate, and gives a dish an earthy, meaty complexity that is incredibly delicious when balanced with other flavors. The umami flavor profile can be found all over the dishes represented here: in the brown-gravy on the mapo tofu, in the pork pot-stickers, and in the mushroom-rich stir fry.
(Umami can also be found in dishes around the world from beef wellington and fish stew to parmesan fries and even a plate of fresh, meaty tomatoes.)
Another unique element in Chinese cooking is what's known as five-spice, which traditionally combines star anise, cloves, cinnamon, Sichuan pepper and fennel seeds, and is known for it's delicate balance of sweet, savory and spicy.
The Chinese inspired dishes on our tour today are:
Vegan mapo tofu;
Sweet and sour chicken on a bed of lo mein;
Orange chicken and rice with roasted broccoli and pork potstickers;
Veggie egg rolls;
Shrimp stir fry with mushrooms, baby corn and snow peas.
Whether you're dreaming of wandering through the bustling port cities of Hong Kong or Shanghai, marveling at the mighty Yangtze River and spotting giant pandas in Sichuan, or soaking in the vibrant culture of iconic Chinatowns in San Francisco, Vancouver, or New York City—let your taste buds lead the way. Grab your favorite Chinese takeout or venture into something new and delicious.

We're Traveling By Food this summer!
This week we visit Louisiana, with its Cajun and Creole heritage. Cuisine from the region includes hearty, rich dishes, often spicy, and many starting with the basic trio of onions, celery, and bell peppers.
Influences include French, African, Spanish, and Native American flavors.
Here we find:
shrimp and Andouille sausage étoufée over rice with Creole spiced garlic bread;
shrimp gumbo;
shrimp po' boy sandwich;
blackened chicken in a creamy Cajun pasta with peppers and zuchini;
blackened salmon with Cajun remoulade, collard greens and wild rice;
chicken and sausage gumbo.
You can almost feel the balmy air as you imagine strolling through the French Quarter or floating in a canoe past cypress knees on a bayou passage out to the gulf. Are those gator eyes peeking above the water's surface?!
